Women's News of the Week

Fat Acceptance*

So I’ve been reading lots of stuff about Fat Acceptance (FA) lately. As a person who’s always thought “beauty” was synonymous with “skinny” it blows my mind when critiquing myself in the mirror. First let me say - I’m not skinny, but I’m active and healthy. But I do not have an ideal BMI – actually I’m a tad “overweight” which always depresses me.

Anyway, my mind is blown because accepting my pudge is totally counterintuitive. I’m supposed to hate myself for being overweight, right? I’m supposed to hate myself for wanting an ice-cream cone, right? Liking food makes me a weak, substandard representation of my sex?

YES YES YES! But most champions of FA say NO NO NO! Confused? YES YES YES!

Through all of the muck and mire associated with FA and FA vs Health Freaks I’ve pulled out some healthy, helpful kernels of truth. Kernels are as follows: Not everyone who is fat is unhealthy, lazy, etc. Not everyone should be a size 4. Not eating food is no way to live.

Using this logic makes me think because I’m active & healthy that I shouldn’t beat myself up over being “overweight”. I should focus on being healthy and enjoying my life. I should not feel constantly deprived. This is going to take some reprogramming. Seriously.

How do I reprogram myself? Where do I go from here? Ideas?


*Obviously FA is not a women’s only issue, but I think it’s more common for women to struggle with their weight as compared to men.

Friday Five

(1) Lately I’ve been 100% uninspired to work while I’m at work. I feel guilty and lethargic. I’m in a total funk. It’s just like the working world has gone down the toilet. No one is happy. No one is productive. I’m pretty sure it’s the trapped feeling the economy has put on us. I’m doing my “rain rain, go away” moves in hopes that it will move out the bad mojo.

(2) I’m utterly thrilled about “the big f#$%ing deal” that was signed into law this week. We need health care reform in the US. The uninsured in the US have been treated like second class citizens. I’m glad to see that come to an end.

(3) Another positive thing from the Health Care Reform Bill is that restaurants will be forced to be more transparent about what’s in our food. Specifically they’ll have to show calorie counts on the menu! I bet you didn’t you know fresh Panera Sierra Turkey Sandwich on wholesome wheat bread was 900 freaking calories. I think menus are going to have to start providing more low-cal options to make sales. Amen to that!

(4) Did you see the articles in the news this week saying women need 1 hour per day exercise to maintain their weight? I think most of us casual exercisers are shocked! I begrudgingly give up 4 hrs per week, but 7 hrs seems darn excessive. It really makes me wish I lived somewhere conducive to biking and walking. I think biking to work is an excellent idea, but I live in a commuter city, 30 miles away from my office.

(5) I’m really looking forward to this weekend. I’ll actually have some home time. After two weekends traveling, I’m going to hang around, do chores, clean, grocery shop, & cook. Honestly this is my kind of weekend. I’m really quite the home body.

Friday Five

(1) Tomorrow, the 20th, is the 1st day of Spring! I’m normally not into season changes, but this year winter just seemed to drag on and on and on. I’m glad it’s over. This does bring up a slight problem – over the winter I’ve chubbed out of my capri pants. Over the past 2 months I’ve been working my rear off to lose the extra poundage but to no avail! So the question is should I (A) keep working and stick it out with my jeans until my capris fit or (B) buy new, bigger capris? What do you think?

(2) In the Battle of the Bulge I’ve been eating healthier. I love finding healthy foods that taste good and are super yummy. My new obsessions are: steel cut oatmeal with fresh fruit and cinnamon, Jello mousse pudding cups, garbanzo beans, purple onions, & my homemade roasted garlic rosemary vinaigrette (which makes anything taste good). Yay for healthy food.

(3) I’m still watching and loving True Blood Season 1 while working out. It makes me want to buy another series to watch. I’m thinking of about getting Glee. I think I’d love it because I loved the Sing Off so much. Any thoughts or opinions on Glee?

(4) I’m going to a wedding this weekend. Actually by the time this post appears I’ll already be there. From last Friday’s post you can tell I’m not exactly thrilled with the expense of going, but I’m going to make the best of it. Since I’ll have a good bit of alone time while the Man participated is man related wedding activities I’m going to Girl it up – see girly movies at the matinee, shop, read, & possibly get my nails done!

(5) Lately I’ve been hooked on reading Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series. It’s a historical romance series that follows the romantic lives of the 8 Bridgerton children. I think it totally plays on my desire to (A) have a big family, (B) live in Victorian England, & (C) have a life filled with romance. Anyway if you meet these 3 criteria you should totally check it out.

I've just eat a 5 Guys Little Bacon Cheeseburger, a ton of fries, & a Ben & Jerry's Peanut Brittle sugar cone. I'm dying. Really, I am. I feel my gut exploding & my arteries hardening. Help me.

Wednesday Women's News of the Week

Have you heard about this??

"A controversial abortion bill in Utah meant to prevent planned assaults on unborn children may have opened a loophole that could allow women to be charged with murder if their reckless behavior causes miscarriages." "The bill was prompted by the case of a pregnant teenager last year who paid someone to beat her, hoping to cause a late term abortion."via ABC News. I think what upsets me the most about this bill is that it does nothing for the actual problem, but only punishes the desperate actions of a troubled woman. I didn't know this was such a wide spread problem that it had to be legistated, but whatever. It's my opinion that these women need counseling and help, not jail time.

On a lighter note... According to the NY Times, Betty White will host SNL on May 8th. Hurrah!

Friday Five

(1) I’m super busy next week… Eeek! Sunday I fly to Cleveland for work. I come home on Tuesday. I’m working in the office on Wednesday. Thursday the hub and I are driving to Athens GA for a wedding. We drive home on Sunday. Can I say it again? Eeek! First let me say that I am undoubtedly an experienced traveler. I’m good at it, but 2 trips back to back always stress me out. Stress=emotional eating=self loathing=stress. You can see the cycle here. Send me happy thoughts/comments next week, please.

(2) As I mentioned, I’m going to a wedding. Let me say that a wedding is joyous occasions and I enjoy them, but I wish they weren’t so damned expensive! Holy cow! This wedding is costing us a fortune. Chris is a groomsman in the wedding so the cost is out of control. Let me break it down, so you can share in my pain: Tux = $190, 3 nights in a hotel = $250, Gas = $80, Bachelor Party/Golfing = $250, Gift = $100, Food = $100. Total = $970! ARGH!!! Again… happy thoughts are needed.

(3) NBC Gives Pickups To Thursday-Night Comedies ‘30 Rock,’ ‘The Office’ And ‘Community’ For 2010-11! Awesome! Woot! Yay! I’m not so excited about Parks & Recreation remaining in my Thursday night lineup, but I can easily over look it when Community is staying! Speaking of great show- do you watch True Blood? I’m 2 episodes in and I’m totally hooked. I’m sure there will be more posting about this soon!

(4) Spring is coming and possibly even here. I need a break in the weather, some sunny days, beautiful flowers, & plenty of antihistamine. I just peaked out my window and the sun is shining for the first time in days. To celebrate spring time I’m going to get a pedicure. My toes have been cooped up since October and a pedicure is just the thing I need to feel more spring like!

(5) I find lot of happiness in routine. This week I did one more thing to automate my life. I made my steel cut oatmeal breakfast all in one day and stored them in containers so I can just grab the container heat it up and enjoy. This is genius! Steel cut oatmeal takes 30 precious minutes to make, but can be stored in the fridge for 4 days. So I made 4 days worth of oats and voila – Instant Neurotic Satisfaction!
